How to survive the recession!

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

We all want the answer to this one, my own thoughts are we need to help each other. The worst thing we can do is demean ourselves by always buying the cheapest. Quality of service and product should still be as relevant in a recession as it is out of one. As a small business we are aware that prices get squeezed down, but where do we draw the line!
Our take on this is to offer value, still use the same products but just reduce the profit margin (yes, we all need this; otherwise we are not able to invest in our businesses future).
The problem of course is some businesses are happy to do work for ridiculous prices that put other companies at risk. A prime example of this is a fellow screen print company offering to supply 250 white t shirts with a single colour print on the front, at a cost of 85p each + vat. Now, I have checked with our supplier and the absolute lowest price on this shirt (all be it a poor quality one) is 72p each + vat.
Therefore the shirt costs allow the printer 13p per shirt, making it £32.50 earnings.
Then we have to take off the cost of the screen ( average is £20.00+ vat ) and the ink around £10.00 - which leaves £2.50.
So for working for around three hours (assuming they have the most up to date equipment) they will earn around 83.3p per hour!!!
To work at this rate is counter productive and I like many of my colleagues think it is a disgrace and extremely damaging to our industry.

In almost all industries, especially the service industry we need to be earning at least £30.00 to £40.00 per hour - this is not being greedy this is realistic! The government screws every last penny out of small businesses and at this rate we can just about survive!

So next time you see a ridiculous price, please think twice.
If it’s cheap then it’s most likely not that good, but more to the point it’s a desperate company damaging it’s own industry and ultimately damaging our economy.

Colour printing on a black t shirt

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Well, we get asked this so many times!
I guess it’s hard to explain how long it actually takes to get your design onto a shirt and of course why it appears to cost quite a lot, especially when you want lots of colours on a small amount of shirts.
I found this video on you tube which explains the separation process quite well, to anyone who’s interested please click this link it is quite informative!

T Shirt Printing Orders needed Now

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Now is the time to buy your printed t shirts!

The industry is traditionally at it’s quietest this time of the year.

Especially on the larger orders, we are all willing to negotiate on price. During summer we are inundated with work, but this time of the year is slow most years add in the equation of an economic downturn and I hate to admit it - it’s a buyer’s market.

So, if you are thinking of buying t shirts for the spring or summer buy them now!

T Shirt Printing

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

There are many forms of t shirt printing the most common being:

screen printing (direct to garment)

screen printed transfers (usually plastisol based)

litho printed transfers

digital transfers

inkjet transfers

laser transfers

sublimation transfers

We need to know as much information as you can provide in order to find the best way of decorating (printing) shirts or other garments for you. Who ever you decide to send your printing to, the following information will always help you to get the best value:

Artwork - send a copy of the design (jpegs are fine at this stage), if you do not have a copy available at least let your printer know how many printed colours are in the design.

Where would you like the design printed: front, back, front and back, sleeve

Shirts (or other garments) - what style do you want?
round neck, v neck, short sleeve, long sleeve

What colour shirt or garment (this is very important, we need to know if it is white or a dark colour)

Quantity, we always work prices out based on quantity. This is not about your printer trying to get more money from you, it is about us trying to give you value. It’s far better to buy 50 shirts at once than buy 25 shirts and then come back 6 weeks later and buy another 25. Please think about how many you need and add a few extras just in case.

Quality of shirt, there are economy ranges for one off promotional events, trips. There are standard shirts, these will give you plenty of washes and are fine for workwear and then there are premium qualities, organic and more stylish shirts.

Do a little bit of research, this always helps. We have all the shirts we can print, available on our Printwear site, just click ‘shirts for printing‘ to view our stock.

Finally, just give your printer are call.  ( You can call Screen Machine on 0113 276 0445 )

We are always happy to advise on any print requirements.
